Ten weeks ago, Grok Bot didn't exist outside SpaceX. Now SpaceX says it has 800,000 paying users every week. "We already had paid weekly users of 800,000 earlier this month, more than doubling over the last month," SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell told analysts on the company's third-quarter earnings call Oct. 20, according to the call transcript. MarketWatch reported the same figure.

Friday brought one more upgrade. "Grok Bot can now save your logins, cards, and contact information," the official @bot account announced. "Add them once, and Bot securely remembers them for the future." That post has drawn more than 750,000 views.

What Grok Bot is

Grok Bot is Elon Musk's bet on SI that does the work instead of just talking about it. "Bots are AI teammates that do real work for you. They sign in to your tools, use them just like you do, and come back with finished work," the company said at launch on Aug. 11.

Each Bot runs on its own computer in the cloud, which keeps working after you close your laptop. According to the launch announcement, Bots can work across apps, tools and websites, "including platforms with no clean API or MCP." It started as an internal prototype that, in the company's words, "took off across the company," handling sales, marketing, office operations and bug fixes before it was opened to the public.

How fast it grew

Launch, Aug. 11: Grok Bot opened in early beta on desktop and iOS for paying SuperGrok and Cursor subscribers. The launch post has drawn more than 58 million views.

Wider access, late August: On Aug. 21, Grok Bot opened a free trial with limited usage to everyone. Five days later it was included with every SuperGrok and Cursor Pro plan.

More platforms, September: An Android app arrived Sept. 2, and a native iPad app followed Sept. 9 along with support for more than 20 languages.

Enterprise, Sept. 3: Grok Bot for Enterprise added access, network and audit controls. The company said "thousands of organizations" had already adopted it, including Legora, Supermicro and ServiceTitan.

418,000 users by Sept. 14: Bloomberg reported that Grok Bot hit 418,000 weekly users as of Sept. 14, up 24% from the week before, citing a company presentation.

800,000 paid weekly users in early October: Shotwell's earnings-call figure counts paying users. SpaceX didn't define the term or give the prior month's number. On the same call, Musk said SpaceX would be "deploying Grok Bot at scale for enterprise customers," which companies could use "as though it were a virtual human," with "wide deployment within a few weeks," TSN reported.

One plan for everything, Oct. 12: The X Subscription now bundles Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium into a single plan.

Here's what Grok Bot can actually do today, checked against the company's own announcements.

Its own computer and browser

Every Bot has a cloud computer that is "always on, with browser and terminal access." It signs into your apps, and the work happens "in the actual tool instead of a chat draft," the company says. You can also use that remote computer from your phone.

Routines it learns by watching

Have a Bot "follow along the next time you do a job." It saves the workflow as a routine, takes your corrections and runs it on its own from then on.

Its own email address

Since Oct. 9, Bots have their own inbox to "sign up for services, contact businesses for you, or schedule time with someone." Plus aliases let a routine run only on mail sent to one address.

Voice, voice notes and the iPhone Action Button

"Grok Bot can talk now," the company said Sept. 17, in a post with more than 15 million views. A day later it could send you voice notes. On iPhone 15 Pro and later, you can set Grok Bot as the Action Button and press it to talk.

A stand-in at your meetings

The company lists "meeting stand-in" among its core jobs: a Bot "joins meetings when you can't make it," takes detailed notes and sends a summary.

Pages: reports, memos and dashboards

Since Oct. 21, you can ask a Bot for a page, "then edit it together or have Bot keep it up to date."

Shopping with guardrails

"Grok Bot can now buy things on the internet" through Link, the company announced Aug. 28. "You approve every spend request, and Grok Bot receives a secure, single-use card for each payment." The feature launched for U.S. users.

Your money, read-only

The Finance integration links bank, card and investment accounts through Plaid. Access is read-only, "Grok Bot never sees your logins, and you can unlink anytime."

Logins handled safely

Bots can fill forms and logins with any password manager. They also work with 1Password, which keeps your secrets in your vault and lets you approve each fill. As of Friday, they can securely save your logins, cards and contact info.

A growing marketplace of connections

Bots plug into Outlook, Calendar and OneDrive, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, Microsoft Teams, Salesforce, HubSpot and Gong, Shopify, and Robinhood, Coinbase, Trello and eToro. Teams can now submit their own connectors to the marketplace.

Built into X

Bots can search, read and monitor X with no setup, read X Chat once you connect your account, and start working when you tag @bot in a post. Connecting X creates a developer account with free API credits.

Your phone's apps

Since Oct. 22, Bots can use Calendar, Reminders, Contacts and more on iOS and Android.

Team Bots and code

Team Bots are shared teammates that work in Slack, now in public beta for Teams and Enterprise. Bots can also hand coding tasks to Cursor and manage pull requests on GitHub.

It offers to help before you ask

Since Oct. 1, your main Bot can spot work it can take off your plate and offer to handle it.

The results so far

SpaceX runs its own operations on Grok Bot. The company says its in-house procurement Bot, Haggle Bot, saved it more than $100,000 in its first week. In one support incident, Grok Bot cleared 204 tickets in about 10 minutes, with a single engineer approving the batch. On Oct. 16, the company said computer tasks now finish 3x sooner on average.

That's the Musk playbook: build it, use it in-house, then ship upgrades every few days. In 10 weeks Grok Bot went from a beta for top-tier subscribers to a tool with 800,000 paying users a week, its own email address, a voice and a credit card it can only use with your approval.
