MAHA Architect Calley Means Quits the White House, Praising Trump and RFK Jr. and Blaming DC's 'Dark Forces'

The adviser who helped bring Trump and Kennedy together says the bureaucracy is protecting the status quo. The final straw, a source says: the federal ultra-processed food definition, stuck in review since August.

Calley Means, the health entrepreneur who helped bring Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Donald Trump together in 2024 and became the loudest voice for Make America Healthy Again inside the administration, resigned Thursday, the Wall Street Journal first reported, per Reuters. He left with praise for both men and a shot at the people he says are in the way.

"I am resigning from the White House with tremendous respect for President Trump and Bobby Kennedy," Means wrote on ๐•. "They laid out a vision of combatting the entrenched, dark forces in DC that profit from Americans getting sick."

To NBC News, he put it more bluntly: Trump and Kennedy are "two historic figures who are committed to confronting a corrupt DC bureaucracy that is doing everything possible to protect the status quo," he said.

What stuck in his craw

The final straw, a person familiar with his decision told NBC, was the federal definition of ultra-processed foods. HHS and USDA sent the government's first proposed definition for final review on Aug. 10, and it still hasn't come out, NBC reported. The Journal reported that Means blamed others in the administration for letting food companies and special interests have too much sway, according to Reuters.

That definition matters more than it sounds. When Kennedy announced it, he noted that nearly 60% of the American diet is ultra-processed food and more than one in five American children are obese, per HHS. Without a legal definition, schools, food-aid programs and labels can't act on it. Every month it sits in review is a month the food industry wins by default.

What he got done

Means isn't leaving empty-handed, and he made sure to say so. He listed Dietary Guidelines reform, psychedelic therapy reform, removing soda from SNAP, getting food dyes out, reforming the GRAS loophole that lets companies declare their own additives safe, and overhauling what the government buys to feed people. "More policy and cultural change has happened around these goals in the past 2 years than any time in history - and I know this movement is just getting started," he wrote.

He also helped put animal protein at the top of the new inverted food pyramid, the Washington Examiner noted. That's a real record. Most of those fights were unthinkable under any previous administration, Republican or Democrat.

Why it matters now

Means was more than a staffer. He and the late Charlie Kirk helped broker the first conversations between Trump and Kennedy in July 2024, per the Examiner, the alliance that brought MAHA voters into Trump's coalition. He served as a special government employee before becoming a full-time senior adviser and divested from his company, Truemed, to take the job, NBC reported.

His exit lands 12 days before the Nov. 3 midterms, as Republicans try to keep those voters, Axios noted. Some MAHA supporters have been frustrated with the pace on food and farm chemicals, including Trump's February order to boost domestic production of the weed killer glyphosate, an order farm groups favor because, they argue, limits on the chemical would raise food prices. HHS didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

The way Means left is the tell. He didn't torch Trump or Kennedy on the way out. He aimed at the bureaucracy and the food lobby, and he named the next fight. The ultra-processed food definition has been drafted and is sitting in final review. Getting it out the door would be the best answer anyone could give him.
