Mamdani-Backed House Candidate Brad Lander Was Detained by Israel's Army. Hours Later, He Accused Israel of 'Ethnic Cleansing.'

Lander, the Democratic nominee for a safe New York City seat, joined about 80 activists on a West Bank olive harvest that Israel's military says was never cleared with authorities. He was freed once officials learned he was a candidate. The election is Nov. 3.

Brad Lander is the Democratic nominee for Congress in New York's 10th District, a deep-blue seat covering lower Manhattan and part of Brooklyn. He is a former New York City comptroller and a close ally of the city's socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani. On Wednesday, Israeli soldiers and police detained him in the West Bank, where he had joined about 80 activists and rabbis picking olives with Palestinian farmers near the village of Nahalin, outside Bethlehem, NPR reported.

Lander broke the news himself, posting a selfie from the bus that carried the group to an Israeli police station. "I've been detained by the IDF, along with a group of rabbis & volunteers," he wrote. "The occupation is a crime under international law. Harvesting olives isn't a crime under any law I know," Fox News reported.

Why Israel stepped in

Israel's military gave a plain reason. Harvesting in that area requires farmers to file a request ahead of the season so the army can coordinate "security of the area and maintain public order," and no request was filed, the IDF said, according to NPR. Troops declared the field a closed military zone about two hours after the group started working, the Jerusalem Post reported. Israel Police said the activists had entered an area near the fence of the Israeli settlement of Beitar Illit that required approval before entry, the Times of Israel reported.

Think of it like a construction crew showing up on a street next to a military base without telling anyone. The work itself may be harmless. Doing it unannounced, with dozens of strangers, is what gets the gate guards involved.

The army also made clear it sees a bigger concern. Its Arabic-language spokesman said Israel will "not allow inciting elements to exploit civil activity to provoke violence or create disturbances," adding that "the olive harvest season is an agricultural activity; it must not be transformed into a period of violence and conflict," the Post reported. The IDF said the landowner has now been given the contact information to schedule a coordinated harvest.

Out in hours, then "ethnic cleansing"

Lander didn't stay long. "Regarding reports of the detention of a congressional candidate, we note that he was released once the matter was brought to our attention," the military told NPR. Lander said he was let go with a "warning," "apparently because of my public profile (I told them I wasn't even a congressmember yet, just a nominee)."

The rabbis and volunteers he came with stayed in custody. Lander used his release post to go further than the olive grove. "These detentions by the IDF are one more attempt to undermine Palestinians' right to harvest their olive groves, travel on their roads, and live in their homes. Yet one more element of escalating, and very clearly state-sponsored ethnic cleansing," he wrote on X.

A trip built for the cameras

This was not a chance encounter. Lander spent a chunk of the home stretch of his campaign in the West Bank, the Washington Examiner reported, posting videos with Palestinians along the way. On Monday he laid out the purpose. "Our goals for the trip are to help protect the olive harvest โ€” and to shed a light on the reality of the occupation," he wrote, describing a coalition helping farmers "in the face of state-sanctioned settler terrorism."

The harvest was organized with the left-wing Israeli group Rabbis for Human Rights, the Jerusalem Post reported. In a video from the bus, Lander said the Israeli military had been called by settler security, the Washington Times reported. Election Day is Nov. 3, less than two weeks away.

Who Brad Lander is

Lander served as city comptroller, the city's chief financial officer, and ran for mayor in 2025 as one of 11 Democrats in the race, Reuters reported. In June he crushed Rep. Dan Goldman in the Democratic primary, 58,047 votes to 29,781, Ballotpedia's tally shows. The race turned on Israel. Lander, who is Jewish, calls Israel's war in Gaza a "genocide," NBC News reported, and has said he would oppose more military aid to Israel, the Brooklyn Paper reported. Mamdani backed him, and so did Sen. Bernie Sanders, the BBC reported.

He is also a former member of the Democratic Socialists of America. He left in 2023 over a rally DSA members held the day after Hamas' Oct. 7 attacks, Fox News reported. He spent part of this year's Yom Kippur at Brooklyn's Grand Army Plaza declaring that Israel is committing genocide, a Washington Examiner op-ed noted. Israel denies the charge, the BBC noted.

Not his first time in custody

Wednesday was Lander's second detention in 16 months, both during campaigns. In June 2025, while running for mayor, he was handcuffed by federal agents at a Manhattan immigration court after linking arms with a man ICE was trying to arrest, Reuters reported. The Department of Homeland Security said at the time: "It is wrong that politicians seeking higher office undermine law enforcement safety to get a viral moment," NBC News reported. He was released after a few hours, and Gov. Kathy Hochul said the charges had been dropped, Reuters reported.

He is not the only Democrat to try the West Bank route. Rep. Ro Khanna of California was briefly detained by Israeli forces while visiting the West Bank in July, NPR noted.

Mamdani piles on

Mamdani, who runs America's largest city, weighed in from his official mayoral account. "Harvesting olives is not illegal. The occupation is," he wrote, before accusing Israel of "a horrific genocide against Palestinians." His post drew more than 10,000 likes within hours.

Lander faces Republican Jennifer Moore on Nov. 3, state election records show, in a district so Democratic that he is all but assured a seat in Congress, Fox News noted. He told Israeli officers he wasn't a congressman yet. Come January, he likely will be, and he has already shown voters how he plans to spend his time abroad: picking a fight with an American ally, then accusing it of "ethnic cleansing" on his way out of custody.
