Michigan Democrat El-Sayed's Conservative Outreach Captain Calls Americans 'Idiots' on Hidden Camera, Shrugs Off the Muslim Brotherhood

T.J. Wolfgram's job is winning over independents and conservatives. On tape, he said he has no issue with a movement whose Egyptian branch the U.S. sanctions for backing Hamas.

Abdul El-Sayed, the Democrat running for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat, has a campaign post with a very specific job: winning over independents and conservatives. The man who holds it was caught on a hidden camera explaining why voters worry about El-Sayed's family ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. "It's because Americans are idiots," he said.

His name is T.J. Wolfgram, and his title, as The Midwesterner identifies him and as the video shows on screen, is Independent and Conservative Outreach Captain. He made the remarks in an Oct. 15 conversation with an undercover operative at a restaurant table, wearing a black El-Sayed campaign tank top. The Midwesterner, a Michigan news site, published the video Monday morning, eight days before the Nov. 3 election.

It matters because the race is close and could decide which party runs the Senate. El-Sayed has spent weeks insisting the Brotherhood questions are a smear on his faith. Here is the campaign's own point man for skeptical voters, saying the skeptics are the problem.

T.J. Wolfgram, the El-Sayed campaign's independent and conservative outreach captain, in an El-Sayed campaign tank top on The Midwesterner's undercover recording, Oct. 15. On-screen captions are The Midwesterner's. Cussing bleeped by unga.news. Video: The Midwesterner

What he said

The operative brought up the Brotherhood. Wolfgram took it from there. "The Muslim Brotherhood was the revolution in Egypt that we were, we as the United States, were either neutral on or even supportive of at the time," he said. Then he mocked the story about El-Sayed's birth mother: "And now it's like, 'Oh in 1999, Abdul's mom, who did not raise him because he grew up with his father and stepmom, she worked for a company that transferred $60,000 to the Muslim Brotherhood in 19' โ€ฆ it's like, it's so ridiculous."

"Why wouldn't you support revolutionary movements for your people? I'm not offended by it," the operative said. "It's because Americans are idiots," Wolfgram answered. When the operative added that America has "done a lot of imperialist s**t," Wolfgram said, "F**k yeah."

Then came the line that will follow this campaign to Election Day. "I don't have any issue with the Muslim Brotherhood," Wolfgram said. "And if I knew more about it, I might support some of what they do."

He allowed there would be "cultural differences." "They may choose to treat women in ways that we don't agree with," he said. His fix: Americans who object can "contribute individual money toward NGOs working to combat that or a f**king paramilitary organization," but government "should not be, as a default, to try and tell other people how to live."

The video's own timestamps show it was trimmed from a longer talk, running from 6:24 to 6:29 p.m. that evening. The Midwesterner has not released the full recording. Every Wolfgram quote here is on camera, in his own voice.

What Washington says about the Brotherhood

Wolfgram may not know much about the group, by his own account. The federal government does. On Jan. 13, 2026, the Treasury Department designated the Egyptian and Jordanian branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as Specially Designated Global Terrorists for giving material support to Hamas. The State Department named the Lebanese branch a Foreign Terrorist Organization the same day.

Treasury didn't mince words. Brotherhood chapters "purport to be legitimate civic organizations while, behind the scenes, they explicitly and enthusiastically support terrorist groups like Hamas," it said. It found that in 2024, people who wanted to travel to Gaza to fight for Hamas "needed connections to the Muslim Brotherhood."

Think of a campaign putting someone in charge of calming fears about a candidate's ties to a sanctioned group, and that person says he might like the group if he read up on it. That's the pitch Michigan independents just heard.

Two panels. Top, quotes from T.J. Wolfgram on the Oct. 15 undercover recording: It's because Americans are idiots; I don't have any issue with the Muslim Brotherhood; if I knew more about it, I might support some of what they do; they may choose to treat women in ways we don't agree with. Bottom, the Jan. 13, 2026 U.S. Treasury and State Department designations of the Egyptian, Jordanian and Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood branches.

The $60,000 he laughed off

Wolfgram's version of the mother story also shrinks it. El-Sayed's birth mother, Fatten Elkomy, worked from 1999 to 2004 at the Islamic American Relief Agency, a charity in Columbia, Mo. Treasury shut down IARA's network in 2004, saying its international offices were "providing direct financial support to Usama bin Laden, al Qaida, Hamas and other terrorist groups." She was never charged. We laid out that record here.

El-Sayed says he was raised by his father and stepmother, and he has denied any tie to the Brotherhood. But he has dodged the one document with his own name on it: a Nov. 25, 2012 statement from Egyptian-American "leaders" backing Brotherhood President Mohamed Morsi and urging him to "purge the media and the police." When The Midwesterner asked him about it after last Wednesday's final debate, El-Sayed smirked, rolled his eyes and walked away, the site reported.

More tape, and a second aide

The Daily Wire says it obtained more footage from the same recording. In it, Wolfgram concedes El-Sayed has "problematic professional and personal relations" and calls leftist streamer Hasan Piker a "pricky progressive" rather than an extremist. Asked whether an El-Sayed win would embolden radicals, he said: "Is it going to embolden problematic leaders in some Muslim community? Yes. Is it going to be tenfold or one fold? Probably one fold. And what the f**k are they going to do anyways?"

On El-Sayed's Medicare for All plan, Wolfgram said taxes would "certainly" go up, per the Daily Wire. Then he said the quiet part: "Realistically, like exactly what he says right now is not nearly as important as what he does when he's in the seat."

It wasn't the campaign's only staff problem Monday. The Washington Free Beacon reported that El-Sayed's communications director, Roxie Richner, had called Joe Biden a "rapist" and a "d*****t" and posted "america is cringe" on July 4, 2020, in posts since deleted. The Free Beacon noted that El-Sayed badly needs Black voters, who remain strong Biden supporters.

What's next

The video had more than 580,000 views on X by Monday night, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee reposted it. We found no public response from El-Sayed or his campaign. Republican Mike Rogers, a former FBI agent and House Intelligence Committee chairman, has made the Brotherhood the center of his closing argument. On the debate stage last Wednesday, El-Sayed called that line of questioning "really quite shameful."

The seat is open because Democrat Gary Peters is retiring. Michigan votes Nov. 3. The voters El-Sayed's outreach captain was supposed to win over now know what he thinks of them.
