The president called Miller “one of my most trusted advisors” and said he starts Monday, Nov. 9. Susie Wiles, whom Trump credited with an “outstanding job,” shifts to the Trump Political Operation.

President Donald Trump on Friday elevated Stephen Miller — his deputy chief of staff and one of the architects of the administration’s border and deportation agenda — to White House chief of staff, effective Monday, Nov. 9. Susie Wiles, who has run the West Wing since Day One of the second Trump term, is moving to the Trump Political Operation, the president said.

Trump announced the change in a Truth Social post Friday afternoon:

“I am pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Miller, the current Deputy Chief of Staff of the Trump Administration, and one of my most trusted advisors, will become the Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026. Susie Wiles, who has done an outstanding job, will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation. I want to thank her for her service as Chief of Staff — She has done a great job! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

Wiles’s farewell

Minutes later, Wiles posted her own farewell on 𝕏, marking Friday as her last day as chief of staff and keeping the focus on what she and Trump built together — the border, taxes, the economy, and America First.

“Serving President Trump in the White House has been the honor of a lifetime,” Wiles wrote. “I’m so proud to have been a part of what we’ve accomplished together from securing our border and cutting taxes to strengthening our economy and putting America First.”

“More than anything, I’m grateful for the extraordinary people I’ve had the privilege of working alongside. While my role may be changing, my commitment to the President and the mission never will.”

That is not a firing framed as exile. Trump kept Wiles on his team — shifting her to the political side — and put his policy enforcer in the chair that runs the White House day to day for the final two years of the term.

Who Stephen Miller is

Until Friday’s announcement, Miller served as White House deputy chief of staff for policy and as a homeland security adviser — titles NBC News, CNBC, and other outlets repeated as they confirmed Trump’s Truth Social post. He has been the central figure behind the administration’s hard-line immigration and deportation push: the agenda Trump sold in 2024 and has spent the last two years executing.

Miller is not a new face. In Trump’s first term he was a senior adviser and director of speechwriting. Before that he spent years as a Capitol Hill aide to Republican lawmakers. America First Legal, the group he helped build between terms, became a litigation engine against Biden-era open-border and DEI policies. When Trump staffed the second administration in November 2024, Miller was named deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security adviser alongside other campaign veterans.

Elevating him now puts the immigration architect — not a consensus manager — at the top of the West Wing org chart. For Trump’s base, that is the point.

Timing after the midterms

The move lands three days after the 2026 midterms, in which Democrats took majority control of the House and the Senate, according to major wire and network counts. Trump’s announcement did not mention the elections. He framed the change as a promotion for “one of my most trusted advisors” and a thank-you to Wiles for an “outstanding job,” with a clean handoff into his political operation.

That framing matters. The president is stacking the final stretch with the adviser who has driven his border priorities hardest, while keeping Wiles — the operative who helped deliver 2024 — inside the Trump political machine rather than outside it.

The mid-October “zero chance” contrast

In mid-October, after Politico and The Washington Post floated succession talk, Trump told reporters there was “zero chance” he was considering replacing Wiles, NBC News noted in its Friday write-up of today’s announcement. He called the speculation a “fake story,” praised Wiles as “incredible,” “smart,” and “tough,” and said she would be “here for a long time.”

Friday’s move does not erase that praise. Trump still describes Wiles’s tenure as outstanding — and he is keeping her on the political side. What changed is the West Wing seat: Miller, already inside the building as deputy chief of staff, steps up Monday.

Just the News reported Friday that some conservative hawks had made Wiles a focal point of criticism, blaming her for steering Trump away from harder-line policies. Those claims belong to the critics who made them. Trump’s own words Friday were gratitude and a reassignment, not a repudiation.

What Miller inherits

Chief of staff is the choke point for access, messaging, and follow-through. With Democrats set to run both chambers in January, the White House will face a hostile oversight calendar aimed squarely at immigration enforcement, deportations, and the agencies Miller has steered. Putting him in the chief’s chair signals Trump intends to defend that agenda from the center of the building, not dilute it.

Miller starts Monday, Nov. 9. Wiles’s last day as chief was Friday. The political operation she is joining is the same Trump machine that won 2024 — and that will have to fight through a Democratic Congress to keep America First alive into 2028.

Bottom line: Trump elevated his most trusted immigration architect to run the White House and kept Susie Wiles on his political team. The president’s words, not the spin cycle, are the story — and they start Monday.
