Trump Orders DOJ to Probe Democrats’ Threats Against His AG and Donors: ‘Extortion at the Highest Level’

Three days after Democrats won Congress, the president said threats to impeach Attorney General Todd Blanche and jail Republican donors are a crime, named Sen. Elissa Slotkin, and told targets to send the threats to the DOJ, or straight to him.

Democrats spent the first three days of their new majority telling Trump’s people what’s coming: impeachment for the attorney general, subpoenas for the chief of staff, prison warnings in official letters. On Saturday afternoon, the president answered with an order of his own.

“By copy of this statement, I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The criminal act, in his words: “extortion at the highest level.”

What Trump wrote

Most coverage clipped the post to a line or two. Here is the full text, because the details matter:

“The Democrats are going around threatening a lot of people, including the Attorney General of the United States, and others, with Impeachment and many other forms of punishment, even though they admit they have no reason to do so, and there have been no impeachable acts committed, or even thought of, by the victims of this illegal process. This is extortion at the highest level, and they should be held accountable for this. Also, they’re threatening our Donors, some of the most respected people anywhere in the World, with imprisonment, and many other levels of punishment, just because they happen to be Republicans, or Republican supporters. This is Weaponization and Lawfare at another level. The Senator from Michigan, Elissa Slotkin, is saying that she is going to go after all young people that believe in Republican Values, and that give even the slightest inclination to be a Republican. The imprisonment should be against these EXTORTIONISTS, and Republicans should get smart, fast! Threatening letters have been sent to many people, all innocent, from Democrat Political Leaders. By copy of this statement, I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!”

An hour later he followed up with a call to action. “The threats being made by the Democrat Party against innocent Republican Donors and Party Members are absolutely unprecedented, and totally illegal,” he wrote in a second post. “Please report them to the Department of Justice, IMMEDIATELY! If you would like, send them directly to me, your President. These SLEAZEBAGS should go to jail for what they are doing.” He told the Senate, the DOJ and the House to “stop being pushed around.”

The threats on the record

Trump didn’t list names beyond Slotkin. He didn’t have to. Here’s what Democrats have said out loud since Tuesday, in their own words:

Impeach the attorney general. On Thursday, Rep. Hank Johnson of Georgia told SiriusXM’s Dan Abrams that “the offenses of Todd Blanche demand that he be impeached and convicted and removed from office.” Rep. Deborah Ross of North Carolina said she was “100 percent” for it and couldn’t “imagine we won’t have one,” pointing to a 56-seat Democratic Senate. Neither named a crime. Johnson called it his “personal opinion” about Blanche’s “efforts to undermine the rule of law.” Days earlier, Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove called Blanche “super sus” and said that after subpoenas and hearings, “you can have conversations about impeachment.” That’s the order of operations Trump is describing: the verdict first, the evidence hunt after.

Lawyer up. Rep. Robert Garcia, in line to chair House Oversight, told Stephen Miller to “lawyer up” the day Miller was named chief of staff. Blanche replied that Miller’s lawyer is “me and the entire Department of Justice.” We covered that exchange this morning.

Prison warnings in writing. On Nov. 4, Rep. Bobby Scott, the top Democrat on House Education and Workforce, sent letters to 10 departments and agencies demanding written assurance by Nov. 18 that no records will be “concealed, modified, removed, transferred, destroyed.” The letters spell out that officials who destroy records face fines or up to three years in prison. Democrats don’t hold a single gavel until Jan. 3.

What Slotkin actually said

Trump’s line on Slotkin is about her Oct. 13 appearance at the University of Chicago, a live taping of Vox’s America, Actually! podcast. Asked what Democrats should do with a majority, she said they need to “pick signature cases” and go after “the people around Donald Trump who are doing his bidding,” because they “have no immunity the way the president does.” Then she said who the message is for:

“I want young people coming out of school to say, ‘Should I go work for the Trump administration? Like, that sounds fun. I might get an opportunity.’ I want them to be like, ‘Lord, that might be buying myself a ton of problems that I don’t want. And so, let me avoid participating in that.’ I want that deterrence message sent.”

Slotkin later said she meant corruption, not service. But the students in the room heard it the way it sounded. Michael Bicksel, the University of Chicago student who first reported the remarks, filed a Senate ethics complaint. “Her target was ‘young people coming out of school’ (like me and my classmates),” he wrote. We’ve reported before on Slotkin’s promise to bring a list of targets to “every committee.” The deterrence line is the same plan aimed at the next generation of conservatives.

What “ordering the DOJ” means now

The post itself is the order. There’s no memo yet, and it’s now on Blanche’s desk, the same attorney general Democrats want to impeach. Expect the department to start with what Trump asked the public to send in: the letters themselves, who wrote them, and what they demanded.

That last part is the legal hinge. Federal extortion law, 18 U.S.C. 875(d), makes it a crime to threaten someone’s reputation or threaten to accuse them of a crime “with intent to extort” money “or other thing of value.” Investigators will be looking at whether any threat came with a demand attached: stop donating, resign, don’t take the job.

Members of Congress also have a shield, but it’s narrower than most people think. The Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause protects what lawmakers say and do in their legislative work. The Supreme Court held in Hutchinson v. Proxmire (1979) that it does not cover a senator’s press releases and newsletters. Podcast tapings, cable hits and letters sent to private donors are a lot closer to Proxmire’s newsletters than to a floor speech.

Think of it like a debt collector who calls before any bill is due and tells you he’ll ruin you unless you play along. A real collector needs a real debt. Democrats keep promising punishment and are still out looking for the offense. Trump is betting the DOJ will ask the obvious question first: what exactly did these people do wrong, other than give money to Republicans or work for the president?

What to watch

Whether DOJ confirms an inquiry or asks recipients to send in the letters. Whether any Republican donor goes public with what they received. Whether the House files an impeachment resolution against Blanche once the new Congress opens Jan. 3. And whether Senate Republicans, who Trump says keep getting “pushed around,” put up a fight before then.
